Therapy
Tends to focus on the resolution of old issues, whereas coaching acknowledges their historical impact, but does not explore them in detail. Coaching might feel like therapy… this is not un-typical.
Counselling
Explores reactive problems and behaviours.
Mentoring
Is usually carried out by an expert in a particular field who works with more junior practitioners in that field.
Training
Teaching particular skills, the agenda is set by the trainer.
Consulting
Works with information, processes and procedures, to help an organisations and departments to find solutions.
…and Coaching has a present to future focus, generating a change for you. It is not an unfocused ‘cosy chat’. It’s non-directive and therefore no solution is given by the coach. Coaching helps you to move forward out of your feelings and beliefs, and in to action. It can be both developmental and solutions focused.
